A bedside gun safe is your best compromise between quick access to your weapon and keeping it out of the hands of someone that shouldn’t have it. A lot of home break-ins or burglaries happen at night. Having a firearm within arm’s reach can very well save the lives of your family or yourself.
There are a variety of bedside safes; they can range from less than $50 to over $300. Locking mechanisms will range from a key, dial combination, numeric keypad, no eyes keypad or biometric.
A safe that uses a key as the only access may be very reliable for locking your gun away, but in a panic situation and with little or no light, it may not be ideal for quick access. The same is true for a dial combination. A numeric keypad will be a little better but once again under stress you may not be able to open it.
The most popular would be the no eyes keypad. These can be four large buttons close to each other or four or five buttons that are laid out in the shape of your hand. Usually there is an indention for your hand to slide in, giving you a positive feel for all the buttons. You can program your own combination that will be easy to remember but nearly impossible for someone else to figure out, some safes have the ability to push two buttons at once as part of the combination. This will certainly decrease the chances of someone else opening it. Most safes have a feature that will disable it if the wrong combination has been entered to many times. It will then have to be opened with a key and reset. Some safes also have motion detecting sensors that will set off an alarm and disable it if it is moved while locked. The typical power source is batteries, there are AC wall adapters available for some models and this is highly recommended, we all know batteries die. Another great accessory is a light inside the safe. Although most of the safes are small and it shouldn’t be hard to find your weapon, a light is always a big help.
The biometric system is highly advanced; it reads your fingerprint to open the safe. This is a great idea being that there is not a combination to remember and it will unlock very fast. Unfortunately most of these systems have proven to be unreliable.
It is very important to mount your safe to something sturdy. Not only does this prevent someone from stealing it, it will keep the safe in place while you are unlocking it. Knocking it off a night stand or trying to find it under the bed when seconds count is not ideal. Mount it to the wall, a heavy piece of furniture or to the bed frame itself. You want to be able to open it without getting out of the bed. Once it is mounted practice opening it. First thing in the morning after you wake up open it. Set your alarm clock for the middle of the night and try to open it as quickly as possible. You should practice this as much as you can. Once it is devoted to muscle memory it will be second nature opening your safe. You can have the most expensive gun safe on the market but if you can’t open it under stress and while half asleep it does you no good.
When you decide to purchase your safe do your homework first, read some online reviews. Make sure that what you are buying is going to be dependable. Buy something that is tried and true. Do not buy the latest new concept to hit the market. You are buying this to potentially save lives, not to have the latest trend.
